Two-Star Collision Yields Three-Ring NebulaCredit: X-ray: NASA/CXC/PSU/S.Park & D.Burrows.; Optical: NASA/STScI/CfA/P.ChallisSupernova 1987A occurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy only 160,000 light years from Earth. The outburst was visible to the naked eye, and is the brightest known supernova in almost 400 years.

Tycho's Supernova Remnant. One of about eight supernovae visible to the naked eye in historical records. It burst forth in early November 1572 and was perhaps one of the two or three most important events in the history of astronomy. The "new star" helped to revise ancient models of the heavens and to inaugurate a revolution in astronomy that began with the realized need to produce better astrometric star catalogues and more precise astronomical observing instruments

The alluring Cat's Eye nebula, lies three thousand light-years from Earth across interstellar space. A classic planetary nebula, the Cat's Eye (NGC 6543) represents a final, brief yet glorious phase in the life of a sun-like star.

Mz 3 (Menzel 3) is a young bipolar planetary nebula in the constellation Norma. It is also called the ant nebula because it resembles the head and thorax of a garden-variety ant.

Arp 227 consists of two galaxies in the constellation Pisces: the large (250,000 light-years across) lenticular galaxy NGC 474 (also known as UGC 864) located about 93 million light-years away, and the spiral galaxy NGC 470 at about 95 million light-years away. They lie at a separation of about 160,000 light-years. - Credit: NASA

The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, spans about 50,000 light years across and lies 28 million light years away.

This is What 43,000 Galaxies Look Like On a Map

43,000 Galaxies on a Map / the most complete map of our local universe to date. It took more that ten years to create, has 43,000 galaxies and extends out 380 million light years from the earth. The 3D coordinates of each galaxy was recorded so the raw data could potentially be used to build a realistic 3D model of the universe.

Massive star IRS 4 is beginning to spread its wings. Born about 100,000 years ago, material streaming out from this newborn star has formed the nebula dubbed Sharpless 2-106 Nebula (S106), pictured above. It lies about 2000 light-years away toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus).

Located 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor, the galaxy looks like a wagon wheel. The galaxy's nucleus is the bright object in the center of the image; the spoke-like structures are wisps of material connecting the nucleus to the outer ring of young stars. The galaxy's unusual configuration was created by a nearly head-on collision with a smaller galaxy about 200 million years ago.
