Frank McCourt's series of autobiographies are fantastic (Angela's Ashes, 'Tis, and Teacher Man). These are some of my all-time favorite books: funny, thought-provoking, and heart-rending. McCourt's style is so easy and his stories so expertly told that I often forget I'm reading non-fiction.

At the heart of this astonishing novel is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a South Carolina bastard with an annotated birth certificate to tell the tale. Observing everything with the mercilessly keen eyes of a child, Bone finds herself caught in a family triangle that will test the loyalty of her mother, Anney.
Greenville County, South Carolina: Ruth Anna Boatwright, known to most as Bone, is child born out of wedlock. She narrates the story in a keen and feisty tone as she navigates the trials and tribulations of her family life.
“Don't go taking that gospel stuff seriously. It's nice to clean you out now and then, but it ain't for real. It's like bad whiskey. Run through you fast and leave you with pain.” Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison
