gwranda: Marc ChagallThe Wedding Lights (1945)Chagall painted this in memory of his beloved wife Bella, who had died of a virus infection in New York City in September 1944. She was, he wrote, “the companion of my life, the woman who was my inspiration”. Poignantly, her death had come just eight days after news of the liberation of Paris had given the couple hope that they would soon be able to go home to France. It was, in his words, “her final joy”.
