Andromeda Galaxy - outer space stars

  • DIANA FERNANDA

Robert Gendler The Andromeda Galaxy is our Milky Way's closest spiral galactic neighbor, located about 2 million light-years away. Though visible as a faint smudge with the naked eye, the galaxy comes to life when viewed with basic observing equipment. Amateur astronomer Robert Gendler combined 40 gray-scale frames of the galaxy to create this beautiful image. Color came from previous images. Access to these tools, Nemiroff notes, allows amateurs to contribute scientifically valuable images to astronomy.

Key word: STARS. Other than a handful of deep sky objects (galaxies, nebulas, star clusters) that can be seen w/ the naked eye, this statement is basically correct. The stars we can see do generally fit inside that circle. (See comments below.)

Dec. 30, 1924: Hubble Reveals We Are Not Alone - Astronomer Edwin Hubble announces that the spiral nebula Andromeda is actually a galaxy and that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies in the universe.

43,000 Galaxies on a Map / the most complete map of our local universe to date. It took more that ten years to create, has 43,000 galaxies and extends out 380 million light years from the earth. The 3D coordinates of each galaxy was recorded so the raw data could potentially be used to build a realistic 3D model of the universe.
