Round Tower, Glendalough, Ireland: Round Towers are medieval (9th to 12th c) stone towers found mainly in Ireland. They were likely used as bell towers or places of refuge often located near a church or monastery. Surviving towers are 18m (59 ft) to 40m (130 ft) in height. The masonry differs according to date. Earliest examples are uncut rubble, while later ones are neatly joined stone work. A single door is raised up 2 - 3m, accessible only by ladder. High windows are slits in stone -wikipedia
