Author Jack Kerouac ~His first novel, The Town and the City, was published in 1950. On the Road, although written in 1951 (in a few hectic days on a scroll of newsprint), was not published until 1957 - it made him one of the most controversial and best-known writers of his time.
Jack Kerouac, author of On The Road, was a poet and novelist who was a pioneer of the "beat generation" and was famous for his spontaneous, free-flowing style and autobiographical honesty. He was an underground celebrity during his tragically short life and has been a hero to teenagers and iconoclasts ever since.
Jack Kerouac and his Beat After On the Road, he continued writing novels and published such books as Doctor Sax, The Dharma Bums, and his final great work, Big Sur. He settled in Florida with his wife, Stella Sampas. On October 21, 1969, he died at the age of 47 due to internal bleeding brought about by long term abuse of alcohol.
Jack Kerouac introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in 1948 to characterize a perceived underground, anti-conformist youth movement in New York. The name arose in a conversation with writer John Clellon Holmes. The adjective "beat" could colloquially mean "tired" or "beaten down", but Kerouac expanded the meaning to include the connotations "upbeat," "beatific," and the musical association of being "on the beat"

On March 12, 1922 Jack Kerouac was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He wrote extensively but is most remembered for his auto-biographical book “On the Road”. It was written on one long continuous scroll in 1951, over 3 substance-filled weeks. Making it possibly one of the most productive benders in history. His name is synonymous with the Beat Generation and his “First thought, best thought” style continues to influence writers today. FUN-FACT: English was actually Jack's 2nd language.

Neal Cassady was born 88 years ago today 2-8 in 1926. Cassady was a major figure of the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the psychedelic movement of the 1960s being a member of Ken Kesey's Merry Prankster group. He was the model for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's novel, On the Road. He passed in Mexico in 1968.
