Originally from the Netherlands, van Hasselt worked from 1905 in France. In Paris, his specialty was posters, possibly out of necessity. Van Hasselt also painted and drew portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and interiors.

Tatyana is reading a romantic novel and quite absorbed by it, but her mother tells her that real life is very different from such stories.
