The Persistence of Memory Salvador Dali
Ants Swarm, Division, Backgrounds Blurred, Floors, Camembert Cheese, Drooping Clocks, Einstein Theory, Cheese Melted, Decay
When asked if his drooping clocks were inspired by Einstein’s theory of relativity, Dalí declined, saying they were inspired by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. The theme of this Surrealist masterpiece is time, decay the subconscious. Ants swarm towards metal as if it were rotting flesh; a sluggish monster in the profile of Dalí snoozes on the floor; and the Catalonian Mountains in the background blur the division between objective and subjective reality.
The daddy of Art Nouveau, Alphonse Mucha! On first glance this is an innocent advert for cigarette papers. On closer inspection it’s jam packed with sexual references. The woman’s toe is curled up, symbolising female arousal; the JOB-shaped clasp draws our eyes to her breasts; a subliminal link is drawn between smoking and oral fixation. In 1898, smoking meant sex, not coughing and terminal illness.

The Kiss,(1907)Gustav Klimt The Kiss has pulled on heart strings for a century. Contemporary critics however thought it was perverse and pornographic. The gilded background is made of layers of golden leaf. Combined with the mosaic effect, Klimt draws influence from Byzantine art. The man’s robe is covered with squares, the woman’s with circles and flowers; masculinity and femininity unite. Some see a secret phallus in the composition.

Pablo Picasso. Leaning Harlequin. 1901. Oil on canvas. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
Seated Harlequin Pablo Picasso (Spanish, Malaga 1881–1973 Mougins, France) After experimenting with a variety of styles in the year following his arrival in Paris, Picasso developed a style properly his own in autumn 1901. He painted six canvases, all about the same size, with either a single figure or a couple seated at a café table, that together constitute one of the greatest achievements the twenty-year-old artist had yet accomplished.
Study the artwork of a modern artist whose very name has come to mean a masterpiece of art-- "a Picasso." If your children have been studying more traditional artists, the works of Picasso may be a most welcome change of style. Dabble into the artistic schools of Cubism and Collage as you reproduce your own Picasso-styled art. It's fun! I'm going to walk you through a Picasso artist study: share what we did and also share some additional ideas and resources. Pick and choose what works for you.

František Kupka, The Cathedral 1912-1913, oil on canvas, 180 x 150 cm, Museum Kampa, Prague, Czech Republic. The Orphists were rooted in Cubism but moved toward a pure lyrical abstraction, seeing painting as the bringing together of a sensation of pure colors. More concerned with the expression and significance of sensation, this movement began with recognizable subjects but was rapidly absorbed by increasingly abstract structures. Orphism aimed to dispense with recognizable subject ma

ORPHISM: term coined by G.Apollinaire in 1912. An offshoot of Cubism that focused on pure abstraction and bright colors, influenced by Fauvism, theoretical writings of Paul Signac, Charles Henry & the dye chemist Eugène Chevreul. This movement, perceived as key in the transition from Cubism to Abstract art, was pioneered by FRANTIšEK KUPKA (Cz), R.& S.Delaunay, who relaunched the use of color during the monochromatic phase of C. and removed visible subject matter entirely.
