Ostrich egg globe, the world's oldest globe showing the new world
Oldest globe to depict the New World may have been discovered - The globe, about the size of a grapefruit, is labeled in Latin and includes what were considered exotic territories such as Japan, Brazil and Arabia. North America is depicted as a group of scattered islands. The globe’s lone sentence, above the coast of Southeast Asia, is “Hic Sunt Dracones,” or "Here be dragons."
An Austrian collector has found what may be the oldest globe, dated 1504, to depict the New World, engraved with immaculate detail on two conjoined halves of ostrich eggs. The globe, about the size of a grapefruit, is labeled in Latin and includes what were considered exotic territories such as Japan, Brazil and Arabia. North America is depicted as a group of scattered islands. The globe’s lone sentence, above the coast of Southeast Asia, is “Hic Sunt Dracones.”
Ostrich-Egg Globe May Be Oldest to Depict New World #world #map
“Here be dragons" - In early maps, you would see images of sea monsters; it was a way to say there’s bad stuff out there. The only other map or globe on which this specific phrase appears is what can arguably be called the egg’s twin: the copper Hunt-Lenox Globe, dated around 1510 and housed by the Rare Book Division of the New York Public Library. Before the egg, the copper globe had been the oldest one known to show the New World. The two contain remarkable similarities.

20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the east/west division can still be clearly seen from space by the difference in light bulbs. The east used sodium-vapour lamps, which give off a yellow colour while the west had fluorescent lamps (mercury arc and gas), which produce a whiter colour. The cost to change one side over would be millions, so they've just been left as they are. Photo credit: Col. Chris Hadfield

Craigslist's "Missed Connections" section is full of ads posted by people who, in most cases, didn't take advantage of an opportunity to ask someone out. I think of it happening on a subway, or in a bar, or in line at a Subway. It turns out the most common place it happens in the United States is Walmart. Which makes more sense, actually.
