Ernest Hemingway, the second oldest of six children, was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899 and lived until 1961, thus representing the first half of the twentieth century. He more than represented it, he embodied it. He was a national and international hero, and his life was mythic. Though none of his novels is set in his own country—they take place in France, Spain, Italy, or in the sea between Cuba and Key West—he is a quintessentially American writer and a fiercely moral one.

You can read the piece via the below link: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/oct/13/finest-life-you-ever-saw/ Howell Raines at the Washington Post also offers a review of Hemingway's Boat. While reading “Hemingway’s Boat,” it occurred to me that serious students of Ernest Hemingway have been like passengers in another vessel, the metaphorical boat invoked by his friend and rival F. Scott Fitzgerald in “The Great Gatsby.” As readers, we have been beating against a ceaseless current of posthumously published novels, biographies, family memoirs, psychoanalytic studies and polarized critical debates about Hemingway’s oeuvre and character. Now thanks to Paul Hendrickson, we can rest on our oars for a while. 16-Year-Old Marcel Proust Tells His Grandfather About His Misguided Adventures at the Local Brothel
16 Year, Link Letters, Proust Brothel, Local Brothel, Chamber Pot, Brothel Letter, Marcel Proust
Marcel Proust - Letter to Grandfather to recoup costs of rehabilitative prostitute and chamber pot, 1888.
Marcel Proust was undoubtedly a gifted author. [...] he was also, it is said, obsessed with masturbation. [...] And so, in May of 1888, in an effort to cure him of this "problem" having recently walked in on him "on the job," Dr. Proust gave his 16-year-old son 10 francs and sent him off to a local brothel. As evidenced by the following letter to his grandfather, [...] the visit didn't go to plan. | Caption at link: Letters of Note http://www.lettersofnote.com/2013/08/my-dear-little-grandfather.html?m=1
Marcel Proust était un porc | le Bonbon Nuit
Young Marcel Proust once suffered from an obsession with masturbation. His father worried that the habit could cause homosexuality if left unchecked. Given 10 francs by Proust père, Marcel went off to the neighborhood brothel to, in theory, get himself set straight. And the outcome of this 'cure'? 16-year-old Proust tells the story.
