The Diving Bell and the Butterfly | 32 Books That Will Actually Change Your Life - Happy that a book that was written in French makes it to a US list and #1. This book is universal anyway and I put it #1 on this list too. I think with admiration of Jean-Dominique Bauby who was Editor in Chief of Elle Paris and wrote the book by winking one eye. He passed away but he gave us a marvelous testimony on love and life. Now I can't wait to (re)read all the other books on this #Buzzfeed list #wow #books

26 Contemporary Books That Should Be Taught In High School. I haven't read them all but there are some great selections here.
So I'm still fully supportive of the 19th and 20th century curriculum, but these are definitely books that high schoolers should read on their own :) 26 Contemporary Books That Should Be Taught In High School
26 Contemporary Books That Should Be Taught In High School: Great list of books overall! I've read about 8 of these entries
Not all of these books would have been wise choices for me as a high school teacher to require all students read them. However, they make excellent choices for me, as well as anyone who would like to read something "interesting for a change." 26 Contemporary Books That Should Be Taught In High School

"She'd written, 'Up, down, same thing.' And then later when they were at the beach, Jiko said those exact same words … 'up, down, same thing.' I had that dream over a week before I read about the beach, so how did I know that?" -- from "A Tale For The Time Being: a novel" by Ruth Ozeki (p. 230)
A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki This gorgeous and intricate novel tells the story of a novelist living in the Pacific Northwest who discovers a teenaged Japanese girl's diary that has washed ashore. The story moves back and forth between the two narratives, and it's easy to imagine a small-screen adaptation that slowly unravels the mystery of the girl who penned the diary.
A brilliant, unforgettable, and long-awaited novel from bestselling author Ruth Ozeki. Full of Ozeki’s signature humor and deeply engaged with the relationship between writer and reader, past and present, fact and fiction, quantum physics, history, and myth, A Tale for the Time Being is a brilliantly inventive, beguiling story of our shared humanity and the search for home.
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. A brilliant, unforgettable, and long-awaited novel from bestselling author Ozeki. In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century.
(Lauren) A Tale for the Time Being / Ruth Ozeki / Just finished this fantastic novel. Highly recommend to any fan of Murakami, philosophy, botanists, or amateur sleuths.
Book #40 was A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. This is a philosophical novel, a coming-of-age novel, a mystery novel sprinkled with a dash of magic realism. It’s about a japanese girl and a woman in British Columbia who is drawn into the story after discovering the girl’s diary. This book covers so much ground, but never loses its focus. It covers bullying, child prostitution, depression, suicide, and more. The story manages to be heart breaking and optimistic at the same time. Read it!

Please Ignore Vera Dietz was a 2011 Printz Honor book. When her best friend, whom she secretly loves, betrays her and then dies under mysterious circumstances, high school senior Vera Dietz struggles with secrets that could help clear his name.
Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King A lot of hype is around this book with the Printz Honor awarded to it. It seems interesting and something a lot of people are reading.
When her best friend, whom she secretly loves, betrays her and then dies under mysterious circumstances, high school senior Vera Dietz struggles with secrets that could clear his name. The story line of this book is so good that you really won't want to put it down. It has sad parts, parts that will make you pull for the heroine, and parts that make you want to slap Vera. I really liked how Charlie manifested himself in Vera's imagination.
"Vera has spent her whole life secretly in love w/her best friend Charlie. And over the years she has kept a lot of his secrets. Even after he betrayed her. Even after he ruined everything. So when Charlie dies in dark circumstances, Vera knows a lot more than anyone—the kids at school, his family, even the police. But will she emerge to clear his name? Does she even want to? Edgy and gripping, Please Ignore Vera Dietz is an unforgettable novel: smart, funny, dramatic & always surprising."

Civil Wars, Worth Reading, Books Worth, Movie, Cold Mountain, Favorite Book
Cold Mountain - 1997 historical U.S. Civil War novel by Charles Frazier which won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. Superb book and movie.
Written in 1997, Cold Mountain remains one of my favorite books of all time. A modern day classic set during the Civil War, it details the long journey home of a Confederate soldier who has recovered from serious injury, and knows he is going to be sent back to fight again. The tale of his arduous struggle to get back to Ada, the woman he loves, is profoundly beautiful and moving. A must read!
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. Read this in two days, snowbound in a hotel room. This is one of those "The Book was (much) better than the movie, although the movie was decent.
To honor yesterday's 150th Anniversary of Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House,This week's Friday Film Adaption features another civil war era story, Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier http://padmeslibrary.blogspot.com/2015/04/fridays-film-adaptions-cold-mountain-by.html
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier - the book AND the movie. The movie has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.
Cold Mountain: A Novel by Charles Frazier -- The book, about a Civil War soldier trying to make his way home, was compelling.
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier (1997) | A soldier wounded in the Civil War, Inman turns his back on the carnage of the battlefield and begins the treacherous journey home to Cold Mountain, and to Ada, the woman he loved before the war began. As Inman attempts to make his way across the mountains, through the devastated landscape, Ada struggles to make a living from the land her once-wealthy father left. Neither knows if the other is still alive.

Worth Reading, Book Club, Cormac Mccarthy, Books Worth, Reading List, Movies, Favorite Books, Roads
The Road by Cormac McCarthy, one of my favorite books of all time. (not sure why, it's quite depressing)
The Road by Cormac McCarthy. No other novels of the Apocalypse need to be written; Mr. McCarthy has penned the be-all, end-all end-of-the-world novel.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy: "It's an adventure, believe it or not — the sort of book that, if only for the relentless clarity of the writing, the lucid descriptions of the grasses, the mud, the thorns, and the very arc of the road that cuts through all that, presents...
My #1 favorite book of all time. Not a book club pick, just a book I loved. I have read this three times, listened to the audio and watched the movie.
I can't wait to read this book. The movie was just amazing. “Just remember that the things you put into your head are there forever, he said. You might want to think about that. You forget some things, dont you? Yes. You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Road
Cormac McCarthy is one of the best writers I have read. But his subject matter is quite dark. The Road (this is the book, I have not watched the movie) is about a post-apocalyptic North America. A father and son are walking from the middle of the country to the coast to see if they can find a community that is better. They follow The Road, full of marauding bands and cannibals because it is their last hope. This not a happy book, but it is beautifully and almost poetically written.
