Amiri Baraka obituary
Musical, Quote, Controversial Author, Amiri Baraka, Activist Dies, Black History
“Poetry is music, and nothing but music. Words with musical emphasis.” | 12 Quotes From The Late Amiri Baraka
LeRoi Jones, who changed his name to Amiri Baracka and was a militant, a racist, and a "tireless agitator". A quote: "We want poems that kill….assassin poems, poems that shoot guns/wrestle cops into alleys/and take their weapons leaving them dead/with tongues pulled out and sent to Ireland". LeRoi bit the dust on Jan. 9, 2014 and now his mouth is finally shut.
the african-american poet, academic and activist, amiri baraka, who died yesterday at the age of 79, was an intellectual troublemaker, to be sure; and that's a compliment. • via the guardian • rest in peace, A.B.
Baraka joined Beats Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac His influences ranged from Ray Bradbury Mao Zedong Ginsberg Coltrane. Baraka wrote poems, short stories, novels, essays, plays, musical and cultural criticism and jazz operas. 1963 "Blues People" has been called the first major history of black music to be written by an African-American.

Amiri Baraka Dead: Controversial Author And Activist Dies At 79 Amiri Baraka, the militant man of letters and tireless agitator whose blues-based, fist-shaking poems, plays and criticism made him a provocative and groundbreaking force in American culture, has died. He was 79. Perhaps no writer of the 1960s and '70s was more radical or polarizing than the former LeRoi Jones, and no one did more to extend the political debates of the civil rights era to the world of the arts.
Amiri Baraka ~ Transformed from Beat Caravan of Allen Ginsberg & Kerouac to Leader of Black Arts Movement; Ally of Black Power, rejecting liberal optimism of early '60s & intensified divide over how & whether black artists should take on social issues. Scorning art for art's sake & pursuit of black-white unity, Barak was part of philosophy calling for teaching Black Art & Black History & producing works bluntly calling for revolution. ~By HILLEL ITALIE 01/09/14 AP http://www.huffingtonpost.com

In his lecture titled "Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and Daydreaming" Neil Gaiman examines the importance of reading and writing and our obligations as citizens to use our imagination and provide for others to use theirs. Gaiman explains that without reading and writing we robs ourselves and future generations of many things. A great read, I would definitely recommend! Mariah Childerhouse

This is a unique novel that, thanks to Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, has become a fundamental cultural touchstone, and this cover evokes that aesthetic so is instantly recognisable and taps into the squeamish eye motif of the narrative."
