This is a shieling, a hut once common in wild and lonely places in the hills and mountains of Scotland. This shieling is at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, Scotland. Farmers and their families lived in shielings during the summer while their livestock grazed on the common land. Properly done a heather thatch will last 20-30 years...

Oh wow. Beautiful reading! His voice is fanastic! ~ [Robert Carlyle reads Robert Burns]
Robert Carlyle (Scottish actor) reads Robert Burns - There's something about the Scottish accent that just...works for Burns' poems. Well, maybe I'm stating the obvious here, but what I mean is that I think Burns did write his poems with his native Scottish accent in mind - and used cadence and diction accordingly.
Robert Carlyle (Scottish actor) reads Robert Burns..."Thou Gloomy December", beautiful poem.

Queen Victoria, photographed by George Washington Wilson (1863). Through the 1860s, Victoria relied increasingly on a manservant from Scotland, John Brown. Slanderous rumours of a romantic connection and even a secret marriage appeared in print, and the Queen was referred to as "Mrs. Brown".[

Mary, Queen of Scots last letter, written February 8, 1587 English translation: http://digital.nls.uk/mqs/trans1.html
Last Letter of Mary Queen of Scotts. "Royal brother, having by Gods will, for my sins I think, thrown myself into the power of the Queen my cousin, at whose hands I have suffered much for almost twenty years ... I have asked for my papers, which they have taken away, in order that I might make my will, but I have been unable to recover anything of use to me, or even get leave either to make my will freely or to have my body conveyed after my death, as I would wish, to your kingdom...
Mary, Queen of Scots last letter - Mary Stuart wrote this letter on 8 February 1587, completing it just six hours before her execution at Fotheringhay Castle. It is addressed to her former brother-in-law, King Henry III of France.
