Miao dao （苗刀) is widely believed to descend from the long and narrow ring pommel sword during the Han dynasty. It originally fell out of favour after tha Song dynasty as the long and narrow blade was difficult to manufacture on large scale during ancient times. The word "miao" has two meanings: as an adjective, it means "long and slender“; as a noun, it refers to a small ethnic group in Southwest China in which ever man customarily carries a long, narrow sword.
