“The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours” Alan Bennett

How many have you read? (In college I had a t-shirt that said, "Celebrate Freedom: Read a Banned book." Gosh I loved that shirt. ) :: 40 Banned Books UPDATED: I'm agreeing with the comments and I think that is the point about sharing about banned books. The reasons seldom make sense to those of us who believe in the freedom to read. Here's more info: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks

40 Banned Books to Read at Your Own Risk - Censorship of literature in public schools/libraries is something that needs to be addressed. I am deeply saddened to see that The Giving Tree and Little Women, of all stories, made the banned book list.
40 Banned Books to Read at Your Own Risk --- How different would you be if you had not read some of these books in school?!?! To me as a mother that means these are thought provoking and worth reading and discussing in our home.
40 Banned Books to Read at Your Own Risk- everyone should read banned books!

David Rhodes's long-awaited new novel turns an unblinking eye on an array of eccentric characters and situations. The setting is Words, Wisconsin, an anonymous town of only a few hundred people. But under its sleepy surface..
Driftless by David Rhodes~a great book!

Maybe you haven't heard of Snorri Sturlason, but if you read Tolkien and other fantasy, your reading would be vastly different without him. Read this to find out who Snorri was and how this Thirteenth Century writer and social climber changed literature, especially fantasy, forever.

Song of the Vikings: Snorri and the Making of Norse Myths by Nancy Marie Brown. Like Homer, Snorri was a bard, writing down and embellishing the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia. Unlike Homer, Snorri was a man of the world--a wily political power player, one of the richest men in Iceland who came close to ruling it, and even closer to betraying it.
The exciting and sometimes inspirational story of an amazing comeback and a team's failure to realize it was down, also loaded with lots of insight into the game and how it is played and lived.

Jose Saramago’s Blindness Blindness (Portuguese: Ensaio sobre a cegueira, meaning Essay on Blindness) is a novel by Portuguese author José Saramago. It was originally published in Portuguese and then translated into English. It is one of his most famous novels, along with The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Baltasar and Blimunda.wiki What would happen if everyone were hit by an epidemic of blindness?
Blindness by Jose Saramago: A city is hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" which spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there the criminal element holds everyone captive, stealing food rations and raping women. There is one eyewitness to this nightmare who guides 7 strangers through the barren streets and the procession becomes as uncanny as the surroundings are harrowing.

"Their Eyes Were Watching God" One of the most powerful books I have EVER read! I loved this story :)
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I just finished it. Different to the movie. This surprised me, it wasn't as good as I thought it was. Now, I said it wasn't as good as I thought it would be, that doesn't mean it wasn't good. It's not as detailed or as scary as I hoped it would be. However, bare in mind, it is a children's novel. I enjoyed it though, nevertheless.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Coraline's often wondered what's behind the locked door in the drawing room. It reveals only a brick wall when she finally opens it, but when she tries again later, a passageway mysteriously appears. Coraline is surprised to find a flat decorated exactly like her own, but strangely different. And when she finds her "other" parents in this alternate world, they are much more interesting despite their creepy black button eyes. When they make it clear, however, that they want to make her theirs forever, Coraline begins a nightmarish game to rescue her real parents and three children imprisoned in a mirror. With only a bored-through stone and an aloof cat to help, Coraline confronts this harrowing task of escaping these monstrous creatures.
[The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco] A medieval murder mystery that illustrates the post-modern mantra of perpetual referentiality...It so could have bombed, but ended up on the best-seller list! I feel that even if a UFO had crash landed into the monastery and Aristotelian texts were found in the wreckage, Eco would have found a way to make it believable. That's how clever Umberto is!
