Amalie was born Princess Marie Louise Franziska Amalie, a daughter of Prince August of the Roman Catholic cadet branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife, Princess Clementine of Orleans. Amalie's brother was King Ferdinand I of Bavaria. Amalie had a very happy marriage with Duke Max Emanuel of Bavaria, the baby brother of Empress Elizabeth of Austria.

Ludovika was pitied as three of her sisters became queens and one became an archduchess.  Max and Ludovika had seven surviving children, including Empress  Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary.
