great visual model/ example to post..... would be ideal to highlight a different author and spotlight specific components for a designated purpose each month :) a specific mentor text activity (Patricia Polacco):
Transitions in writing: Showing passage of time... great for teaching narrative writing, and kids love learning from their favorite authors!

Flotsam, David Wiesner Wordless book with amazing illustrations well deserving of its awards. Lots of topics of interesting conversation here (history, science, creative thinking...)
Flotsam - a great picture book that allows kids to create their own words to the story. Good for creative writing.
Flotsam by David Wiesner - probably my favorite kids book. I can't wait to share this with Caleb one day. There are no words, only pictures - so many ideas for homeschool activities inspired by this!
A bright, science-minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam--anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share . . . and to keep. In each of his amazing picture books, David Wiesner has revealed the magical possibilities of some ordinary thing or happening--a frog on a lily pad, a trip to the Empire State Building, a well-known nursery tale. This time, a day at the beach is the springboard into a wildly imaginative exploration of the mysteries of the deep, and of the qualities that enable us to witness these wonders and delight in them.

One of my favorite children's books ... children s book award north dakota keystone to reading book award
Bark, George! Such a funny read-aloud picture book for preschoolers, kindergartners and older children!
One of my favorite storytime books for preschoolers! George's mother wants him to bark, but what happens when he opens his mouth? Great for learning animal sounds, and a nice surprise ending to make the older kids laugh.
Bark, George by Jules Feiffer. In my experience, this book works best with preschoolers or a mixed crowd (2 or 3 to 5 years old). The kids love it when I reach down, down, down while I'm reading (during those parts) and make the animal sounds to the best of my ability.
#24. Bark, George by Jules Feiffer It’s the rare picture book that can be read to preschoolers, grade-school students, and even high-school kids and still get a laugh with its twist ending. Jules Feiffer’s book about a dog who sounds like anything but a dog works on many levels and is incredibly hilarious to boot. Ages 3 to 6.
Book cover with a sitting dog. Bark, George by Jules Feiffer is one of the Top 100 Picture Books as voted by readers of School Library Journal. Fully accessible with images and image descriptions on Bookshare at https://www.bookshare.org/browse/book/1078098?utm_campaign=pbc&utm_source=social.

"Bark, George," says George's mother, and George goes: "Meow," which definitely isn't right, because George is a dog. And so is his mother, who repeats, "Bark, George." And George goes, "Quack, quack." What's going on with George? Find out in this hilarious new picture book from Jules Feiffer.
Bark, George by Jules Feiffer George, a puppy, can’t seem to bark. Instead he makes all sorts of other animal sounds until his mother takes him to the vet to find out why. The animal noises in Bark, George are an effective way to explore language sounds with young children, and the silliness of this story and its simple structure create a highly enjoyable reading experience. Neat Idea! - I Am the Dog / I Am the Cat by Donald Hall >>> Terrific book for writing lesson on voice. The book alternates between a dog and cat talking about themselves. After I read it, we discuss voice, then brainstorm a list of animals I list on the board. Students choose one and write their own, I Am the ______ story. The resulting work is pretty amazing, some is just out-and-out hilarious.

"Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes. Age 2-4. Caldecott Medal Winner 2005. Sitting on the stairs, little Kitten sees what she takes to be a small bowl of milk in the night sky, but try as she might, she cannot get to it. She reaches and chases the bowl, but it always eludes her. Climbing up a tree, she sees below what she thinks is an even bigger bowl of milk. Of course, it is the moon and she gets soaking wet when she jumps into its reflection on the water.
