Word family word tin.
Touch and Tell Standard: W 2 Materials: socks, paper, pencils, small unusual items (Scruffy, dry dog food, hair bow, baby toy, bubble wrap, seasonal objects, etc.) Directions: Place small objects in the socks. Children choose a sock, feel it, and then write a description of what they think is in the sock. Hint! Use one sock for younger children. Number socks for older students so they can write down what they think is in each sock. I “Tin” Make Words Standard: RF 2c, L 2d Materials: magnetic letters, mint tin or cookie tin, paper, pencils Directions: Place magnetic letters that can be used to make a word family in the tin. For example: o, p, t, m, h, c, b. Add a list of words that can be made from the letters in the tin. (hop, mop, top, cop, pop, bop) Children reproduce the words on the lid of the tin and read them. You could also ask them to write the words. More! Put several vowels and consonants in the tin and challenge the children to make all the words they can with the letters. Little to Large Standard: Geometry – compose shapes Materials: crayons, paper Directions: Make a very small shape (triangle, square, trapezoid, half-circle, etc.) in the center of the paper. Children take a different color of crayon and go around it, making it a little larger. Continue using different colors of crayons and making the object a little larger until it completely fills the page. Hint! You could prepare these ahead or let the children create their own small shapes in the middle of the paper.

Great writing idea!
Earlier this year I wrote a post titled What the heck should I write about? that listed lots of online sites and iPad/iPhone apps to help students gather ideas and get started writing! Since then I've found several other great sites so I decided it was time for Part 2! Online Story Writers: Story Strips is a fun site that allows kids to pick a situation for their story. Once the student selects a situation, a comic strip pops up. The student can click on hair, eyes, mouth, and the empty word balloons to create their own story! The Sisters Grimm Fairy-Tale Regurgitator is a fun way to write a fairy-tale! As questions are answered, the wand will fill up. When it's full, the story is ready! Storyboard Generator allows you to choose between horror, comedy or romance. Once you choose your avatar and type of genre, you see the script outline and can then build a storyboard. There's even a video to help you! Story Plant is a fun flash game that also includes a printable activity! In Story Plant, you grow your own story from the story plant. There's a guide to help you through the steps in planning and writing the story. When the plant has stopped growing, you can listen to it read and print it out! There's even a big screen version if you'd like to model this game whole class! Characters from BGFL is such a fun interactive way for students to work on character descriptions. Just click on the various parts of the character to change them. Then write a description on the little notebook on the left side. Writing Topic Generators: While originally created for bloggers, this Random Topic Generator i s great to use with students struggling to decide what to write about. You simply choose from one of the following categories: Opinion, Health, Religion, Science, Art, World, Music, Business, Personal, Technology, People or Recreation and click the Generate another topic button and a topic is generated for you. Don't like it? Simply click the button again. The Writing Exercises websites has lots of great tools for writers! A few of my favorites are... Random Subject to Write About Random First Line Prompts Quick Plot Generator Story Titles and Ideas Character Generator The Writer's Plot Idea Generator The Plot Generator is a little different because it allows you to choose from drop down menus for things like title, opening, conflict, resolution, etc. It kind of reminds me of a mad lib but with options! Short Story Ideas has a bunch of generators: Characters Storyline Titles, Images, First Lines, and more! Story Prompts: Meddybemps has some fun Illustrated Story Starters for kids. Here's a sample of one: Creative Writing Prompts has over 300 different prompts!
CLICK HERE to check out Scholastic's story starter machine. This a such a FUN and creative way to generate writing prompts! My kids LOVE it! Enjoy!

Word work apps
iPad Apps During The Daily Five there are many apps that can be used for working with words. Below you will find a variety of apps that you may want to try out in your classroom. There are some app for lower elementary and some for upper elementary as well. The fourth grade team at HC was kind enough to help me out with apps for the older grades as well as some of the sites and other information on this blog. :) Many of these apps can also be used with multiple ages and the difficulty can be adjusted. You can also click here for a list of my favorite 1st grade apps for all subject areas. - I tried to put the lower ele. towards the top and upper ele. towards the bottom. Tips: Take the time to teach each app to the kids. Use a VGA adapter to project your iPad (2nd gen. or higher). - For the mini or iPad 4 use this link for the lightning connector. Apple VGA Adapter iPad 2 & 3- $29 Word Magic - $0.99 Build a Word - Free Word Wall HD - $1.99 Word Bingo - $0.99 Word Cub - $1.99 Alphabet Car - Free Cimo Spelling Sight Words - Free (or $2.99) Cimo Can Spell (Sound Out) - Free (or $2.99) Louie's Letter - Free Montessori Crosswords - $2.99 Read on Sight - Free Monkey Word - $1.99 Magnetic Alphabet - $1.99 Spellboard - $4.99 Rocket Speller - Free Sock Puppets - Free Little Speller - Free Sparkle Fish - Free PBS Kids - Free Spelling City - Free Chicktionary - Free Shake a Phrase - $1.99 Story Lines - Free Opposite Ocean (Antonyms)- $.99 Grammar Fun - Free Story Wheel - $ 2.99 Puppet Pals - Free Toontastic - Free Madlibs - Free Flash Cards lite - Free Word Wit Word Ball $1.99 Hangman Whirly Word - Free Words With Friends - $2.99 or Free Word Latter Site Speller Word Wonderland - Free Grammar Wonderland Elementary- Free Grammar Wonderland Primary - Free ScootPad- Free App Organization Keeping the apps you would like your kids to use organized can be a challenge. Here are some ideas for how you can organize and manage your apps. - Create 2-3 pages your kids can use during Daily Five time. I have one page for reading, math, and writing. They can't use apps that are not on those 3 pages. - Move the app(s) that you would like your students to use to the bottom task bar. - Create a couple folders with the apps that the kids may use. Put these folders on one page so they are easy to find. Additional Ideas Use an overhead projector. Believe it of not my kiddos LOVE using the overhead projector during word work. I project it onto the small whiteboard in my room and the kids use overhead tiles or letters to build words. They can then trace the words with markers or write the words into their journal.
