Teaching Kids about Positive/Negative Space - Collage with Positive and Negative Shapes

This collage was created by a group of 5th grade Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) students at Valencia Valley School. They wanted to create some large scale pieces for the school lobby. The 36" x 48" piece is in the style of Henri Matisse. Students, led by visual arts teacher John Fossa, painted large pieces of paper, then cut and arranged shapes to create balance between the positive and negative space. The school's Student Council bought the large canvas for the project.

I used my name "Violet" .Get a square piece of grease proof paper...fold it in half, then in half again, and in half again. You will have a piece that looks like a triangle. write your name (fill in the whole shape). Then copy the same thing on each section....will be easy as grease proof paper is a bit transparent.
