Spiritual Midwifery by Inam May Gaskin. From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. #pregnancy
From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own.
Spiritual Midwifery [Paperback] Ina May Gaskin (Author). gave me my first look at how beautifully natural and spiritual the birth process can be.
I devoured this book, from cover to cover, from the birth stories to the technical midwifery lessons in the back.
From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. Includes resources for doulas, childbirth educators, birth centers, and other organizations and alliances dedicated to improving maternity care at home and in hospitals.
Spiritual Midwifery Love this book full of little birth stories from the farm
Here is the 4th edition of the classic book on home birth that introduced a whole generation of women to the concept of natural childbirth. Back again are even more amazing birthing tales, including those from women who were babies in earlier editions and stories about Old Order Amish women attended by the Farm midwives. Also new is information about the safety of techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, information on postpartum depression and maternal death, and recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives. From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. Includes resources for doulas, childbirth educators, birth centers, and other organizations and alliances dedicated to improving maternity care at home and in hospitals.

The Birth House, by Ami McKay (adult fiction). The first daughter in five generations of her Nova Scotia family, Dora Rare becomes an apprentice to a gifted midwife and storyteller before their home is threatened by the arrival of a brash medical doctor who promises sterile and painless births.
The Birth House Book by Ami Mckay | Hardcover | chapters.indigo.ca
"The Birth House is the story of Dora Rare, the first daughter to be born in five generations of Rares. As a child in an isolated village in Nova Scotia, she is drawn to Miss Babineau, an outspoken Acadian midwife with a gift for healing. Dora becomes Miss B.’s apprentice, and together they help the women of Scots Bay through infertility, difficult labours, breech births, unwanted pregnancies and even unfulfilling sex lives. Filled with details as compelling as they are surprising, The Birth House is an unforgettable tale of the struggles women have faced to have control of their own bodies and to keep the best parts of tradition alive in the world of modern medicine."

Business of Being Born. Changed my life and my birthing experience, if you haven't yet, you need to watch this!! Netflix has it available for download
The Business of Being Born, Ricki Lake's documentary about natural childbirth vs Western and how messed up it has become.
"this movie literally changed my life. after watching this i dropped my OBGYN, found amazing Midwives, and had a perfect all natural homebirth and the kicker is, my baby was breech! a MUST watch for all pregnant women!"
Watch The Business of Being Born online. The film examines the different childbirth methods that are available to mothers-to-be. It looks at why giving birth in the U.S has been made into a profitable business
this movie literally changed my life. Every woman who is considering ever having a baby should watch this. Or even someone considering being a father...very eye opening
The Business of Being Born. (Rikki Lake teams with director Abby Epstein.) This controversial documentary takes a hard look at America’s maternity care system. If you are pregnant, I highly recommend taking an hour and a half out of your life to watch this. It is so worth it.
The Business of Being Born - check out the site to learn more about the film, watch the trailer, and view the entire movie online for free!
The Business of Being Born, on netflix instant play right now! Great movie supporting natural birth
This is a must watch for anyone who is pregnant or wants to have kids! It's will be a huge eye opener and might change your mind! It changed mine and it was the best decision my husband and I made. We are now on baby 3 and my 3rd all NATURAL birth with a midwife. Research your birth and be educated before making decisions. This is one of the biggest things you will go through in life. In the U.S. people research buying a car more then they do having a baby! What's more important to you?

John 10:28 (NIV) - I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand
Day 111 (April 21) John 10:28-30 Jesus said, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one."

This is a story of London’s East End as told by Jennifer Worth, a former district nurse and midwife working in the 1950s. Worth’s memoirs are not only a look at the conditions of London’s working class, but are also a heartwarming story of women, friendship, and motherhood.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. While I'm sure I would've been stoned to death for my Sassmouth during this time period, I loved all the women in this book.
Loosely based on an old testament story, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is a tribute to the traditions of women in Biblical times.
Week 17 - The Red Tent (Anita Diamant) "The painful things ... seemed like the knots on a beautiful necklace, necessary for keeping the beads in place." "If you sit on the bank of a river, you see only a small part of its surface. And yet, the water before your eyes is proof of unknowable depths."
Jacob's only daughter is Dinah, revered and even spoiled by four mothers. The heritage of the Jews is told through the female. Thus, it is Dinah's lot to pass on the stories of her mothers and grandmothers for the next generation to revere. Mostly told in the "red tent" where the women go to have their female cycles, Dinah learns what is expected of a Jewish woman and her own rite of passage into Jewish womanhood. Dinah's love, leads to tragedy for her and a need to escape from her family.
Such a fantastic book. Read it 10 years ago, love it to this day.

by Penny Armstrong. The book that first got me thinking about becoming a midwife. I think I have read this one a dozen times.
True story of when hospital-trained midwife Penny Armstrong takes on a job delivering the babies of the Amish, she discovers an approach to giving birth which would change her life forever. A Midwife's Story is a life-affirming book that never fails to enlighten, inform and surprise. Honest and ultimately very moving, it is inspirational reading for all student midwives and expectant parents.
Years ago I read A Midwife’s Story, by Penny Armstrong and Sheryl Feldman. It chronicles Penny’s work as a midwife among the Amish during the 1970s. I had two of my four babies at home. Because I had that “shared experience” with the women in the book, I felt connected to them. I “knew” their stories. But I never dreamed that shared experience would be a primary bond to a real-life Amish woman—I’ll call her Mary—more than twenty years later.
