Playtime Pads - "How I Feel". To allow your children to evaluate & express how they feel in this creative nightime ritual.
For older kids, a notepad such as this might help them find the words they need to express how they are feeling. Modified versions with pictures could also be made for younger children. Overall, this notepad serves as a great expressive activity.
This is a simple, straight-forward way of checking in with a child about how they are feeling. This might be especially helpful with less verbal children & appeal more to independent older kids.
The How I Feel pad from Knock Knock turns an important lesson into a fun game. With fill-in check boxes and stickers it’s perfect for a variety of age groups. It also works well for the adults in your life who have only learned to express themselves in four-letter words.
This is an interesting idea for ways to get children to recognize how they are feeling and provide a basis for recording these feelings day-to-day. While I don't particularly like the format, I would consider making my own chart as a child life specialist and including more specific activities such as "make an art project" or "play with play-doh" or "rest". This way, I could record how the children felt and what activities they would like to do

Great ideas for activities in this blog. One that I saw could be geared more towards older patients.. this is the twitter board. Adolescents and teens can create a "twitter board" updating their status and how they are feeling or something that they want to "report". Yet another way to allow patients to talk about how they are feeling.
This was TOTALLY me as a kid I had a stethoscope and everything :)

Connecting with Compassion: Confessions of two Child Life Specialists: The Value of Child Life: from the perspective of a nursing student
This article shares the importance of pill swallowing and how child life can approach the issue. It is important to choose a developmentally appropriate to way to teach children the practice of swallowing pills. By using an incentive program, this child life specialist used an intervention that offered the patient control of the situation and rewarded her for doing things for herself.
this blog is written by 2 Child Life Specialists, and has a lot of tips on working in the field, grad school, and applying for internships
How to help with pill swallowing - depending on the age, can create ways that are developmentally appropriate to help influence a child to take the pills (incentive program?)
I have seen Child Life Specialists try to be creative about this. Pill cutters and incentives are helpful from what I have learned!
I think an incentive chart can be a great tool for young kids. I have had some experience with them while working with children with autism but never really thought about using one in order to encourage kids to take medicine or comply with other medical needs. Great idea, and I thought it was really awesome that a nursing student took the time to recognize the importance of child life!
Child Life and how we can help with pill swallowing! Patient compliance; anxiety reduction
The documentary "Pill Poppers" questions whether drugs are beneficial or harmful to your health. The average person may be prescribed 14,000 pills (excludes over-the-counter meds) and by the time you reach your 70s you could be taking five or more pills every day. Many people assume that the medications they’re taking are exerting carefully designed effects on their biological functions; in reality, these effects were not designed but rather observed – often simply as a matter of dumb luck.
Does your kid hate to swallow pills? Here is how a Child Life specialist can help!
