Harriet Tubman: Living nearly a century, Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Harriet Ross, was born in 1820, passing away in 1913. After escaping the clutches of slavery in 1849, Harriet rescued countless others from the same fate, operating the Underground Railroad, the secret passageway from the South into Pennsylvania in the North, which was a free state at the time. Famous words: "I freed thousands of slaves, and could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves."
