Jupiter's moon Io is intensely yellow from sulfur and molten silicate rock. Its pocked surface is due to young, active volcanoes.

Oct 2010 Io in True Color Credit: Galileo Project, JPL, NASA The strangest moon in the Solar System is bright yellow. Io's colors derive from sulfur and molten silicate rock. The unusual surface of Io is kept very young by its system of active volcanoes.

The speckled object depicted here is Callisto, Jupiter’s second largest moon. This image was taken in May 2001 by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, which studied Jupiter and its moons from 1995 until 2003.

Callisto, Jupiter’s second largest moon, is roughly the same size as the planet Mercury but only about a third of the mass. It is the outermost of Jupiter’s four large Galilean satellites and orbits at an isolated km from the planet.

Earth and its Water Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is glazed with glistening ocean. This, of course, is where the phrase ‘The Blue Marble’ originated from. All this water accounts to a total volume equal to 1.3 billion cubic kilometres – but did you know that according the model of the Sun’s proto-planetary disk, Earth actually has a deficit of this familiar and life sustaining substance? Astronomers studying how the Earth initially formed have been stuck tryin

How much water on earth? In this illustration, the blue ball represents the volume of all the water on earth, relative to the size of the earth. The tiny speck to the right of the blue ball represents Earth’s fresh water.

This global view of Jupiter’s moon, Io, was obtained during the tenth orbit of Jupiter by NASA’s Galileo spacecraft. Io, which is slightly larger than Earth’s Moon, is the most volcanically active body in the solar system.

Io, one of Jupiter's many moons and larger than our own. With over 400 active volcanoes, Io is the most geologically active object in the Solar System. Seems interesting how all of the biggest moons are related to people that Jupiter had affairs with.

Pluto's giant moon Charon may have had a buried ocean. In July of 2015, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft will be the first to visit Pluto and Charon, and will provide the most detailed observations to date.

If the icy surface of Pluto's giant moon Charon is cracked, analysis of the fractures could reveal if its interior was warm, perhaps warm enough to have maintained a subterranean ocean of liquid water, according to a new NASA-funded study.
