As lava enters cool Pacific ocean water, it immediately begins transferring its heat to the water, causing the water to boil and turn into steam. The cloud that you see here is basically water vapor, but it also has a high concentration of HCl (hydrochloride acid) created by the violent chemical reaction of hot molten lava causing water H2O and sea salt NaCl to react creating HCl hydrochloric acid (in aerosol form).
