A molecular cloud, sometimes called a stellar nursery if star formation is occurring within, is a type of interstellar cloud whose density and size permits the formation of molecules, most commonly molecular hydrogen (H2).

Clouds of Perseus ~ contains over 10,000 solar masses of gas and dust, but the eye is drawn to red NGC 1499. Known as the California Nebula, its characteristic glow of atomic hydrogen gas is fueled by ultraviolet light from luminous blue star Xi Persei. Farther along, intriguing young star cluster IC 348 and neighboring Flying Ghost Nebula. On the outskirts of a giant molecular cloud, another active star forming region, NGC 1333, lies near the edge of the wide field of view.

Alpha is the third brightest star in the night sky and it can be seen how it contrast in color with Beta Centauri. -Then the dark Coalsack nebula and the constellation Crux, the southern cross. Gamma Crux is a Red giant and the color can be seen contrasting against the other stars. -Below Crux the Eta Carina Nebula, a bright nebula that can be seen with the naked eye from dark locations.

Baby stars are forming near the eastern rim of the cosmic cloud Perseus in this infrared image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The baby stars are approximately three million years old and are shown as reddish-pink dots to the right of the image.

A lesser known sight in the nebula-rich constellation Orion, NGC 2174 can be found with binoculars near the head of the celestial hunter. About 6,400 light-years distant, the glowing cosmic cloud surrounds loose clusters of young stars. Covering an area larger than the full Moon on the sky, this stunning narrow band image adopts a typical color mapping of the atomic emission from NGC 2174.
