Alain Delorme, photographer from Paris, captures fascinating photos of bicycle carriers in Shanghai, China. Under the blue sky of a highly colored Shanghai, men carry throughout the city unbelievable piles. These precarious columns made of cardboard or chairs appear as new totems of a society in complete transformation, both a factory for the world and a new El Dorado of the market economy.

Didn't see this big of a load but I saw many men on their bikes looking for stuff and they all had some kind of little bell to ring, some looked homemade.

The bicycling men of China are put on display in a new series, Totems, by French photographer, Alain Delorme. In the 15-part photo series, Delorme has captured the men carrying huge loads (totems) of cardboard, water bottles, fabric etc, while cycling the streets of Shanghai.

Vietnam is known for its cargo bikes, but these delivery men and women in China make the pedalers of Saigon look like pansies. Photographer Alain Delorme became fascinated with the bike haulers of China, especially how their raw humanness contrasts with the sterility of the country’s booming skyscrapers and yet their towering forms are similar.
