Lucy Craft Laney: "After teaching 10 years... in 1883 she opened her own school in the basement of Christ Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia. Among the graduates of Haines Institute were Mary McLeod Bethune, Charlotte Hawkins Brown, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Joseph Simeon Flipper, & Frank Yerby. Because of her work in education, she was one of the first African Americans to have her portrait displayed in the state capital in Atlanta." Found on African Heritage City on Facebook
