Bekko Kushi with Maki-e Lacquer 1840s This is an Edo period (1840s) bekko kushi (tortoiseshell comb) decorated on both sides and across the top with maki-e (gold and silver lacquer) depicting cranes flying through the clouds above pine tree covered mountains, which are all symbols of longevity and good luck. The maki-e painting is carefully designed to enhance the darker portions of the tortoiseshell, while the translucent blonde tortoiseshell is left empty.
