Portrait of Yukio Mishima by Eikoh Hosoe (細江 英公, Hosoe Eikō, born 18 March 1933 in Yonezawa, Yamagata)) is a Japanese photographer and filmmaker who emerged in the experimental arts movement of post-World War II Japan. He is known for his psychologically charged images, often exploring subjects such as death, erotic obsession, and irrationality. #eikohhosoe #yukiomishima #famous #blackandwhite
© Eikoh Hosoe, 1963, Portrait of Yukio Mishima, from the book ‘Ba-Ra-Kei’ The Japanese writer Yukio Mishima committed suicide in 1970, “worn out by conflicts between spirit and flesh, words and the body, art and action”. The book containing this image, Ordeal by Roses (Ba-Ra-Kei), was only published after Mishima’s death, in 1971. Its final chapter was about dreams and death and can be seen as a morbid rehearsal for his last days. (read more) “The portrait with the single rose is a picture of polarities. The dark menace of his eyes is of a man on a determined course. The white rose bleeds into the white of his skin. The picture is stripped down to a final mask with a fierce lyrical accusation.” (Mark Holborn, author) » find more photos of famous people here « | » find more photobooks here «

Yukio Mishima. I am at this point, uncaring of how wrong or ironic this may sound but THIS. This is exactly what I thought Ryiuji would look like. My words can't even express... it just feels to me now like the entire books was a reader insert where Mishima was showing himself as he saw himself and how, maybe, in his inability to preserve the old ways of Japan, he too fell from grace only his resurrection is the writing in which he tries to gain some of that grace and glory back.
