Surprise! Asteroid Hosts A Two-Ring Circus Above Its Surface by ELIZABETH HOWELL on MARCH 26, 2014 Artist’s impression of two rings discovered around the asteroid Chariklo. It was the first such discovery made for an asteroid. Credit: ESO/L. Calçada/M. Kornmesser/Nick Risinger (skysurvey.org)
This artist's impression shows the view from inside the ring system around the asteroid Chariklo (at centre) with potential shepherding satellites also visible. The asteroid is the first non-planetary body in the solar system discovered to have its own ring system. Image released 26 March 2014.

Age of stars is pinned to their spin Astronomers have proved that they can accurately tell the age of a star from how fast it is spinning. We know that stars slow down over time, but until recently there was little data to support exact calculations. For the first time, a US team has now measured the spin speed of stars that are more than one billion years old – and it matches what they predicted.

Meet the Astrophysicist Whose 1980 Blind Date Led to "Interstellar"

Theoretical astrophysicist Kip Thorne was a divorced, single dad raising a teenage daughter when he got a call in September 1980 from a close friend — who happened to be fellow scientist Carl Sagan. Would Thorne be interested in going out with a woman he knew? Though the shy Caltech professor was far more comfortable contemplating black holes and other imponderables than he was navigating the world of dating, he said yes. Thorne took his date, Lynda Obst, then a science editor at the New York Times Magazine, to the world premiere of Sagan's TV series "Cosmos" at the Griffith Observatory.

"I wanted to be a snowplow driver when I was a kid," said theoretical astrophysicist Kip Thorne, pictured. "Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, that's the most glorious job you can imagine. But then my mother took me to a lecture about the solar system when I was 8 and I got hooked." (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times)
I really want to see this movie, Interstellar! "I can't imagine not being in a phase where I'm trying to understand something or create something," he said. "That's the essence of life." Kip Thorne, scientist who worked on this movie project.
Volcanoes shaped the moon's surface until relatively recently. The bright areas are the ancient crust leftover from the moon’s formation, and the dark areas are the relatively newer, smooth plains that formed from all that lava that erupted from the interior. These dark plains are what are called maria, Latin for “seas.”

An armada of telescopes discovered three volcanic eruptions on Io within two weeks, including one of the brightest events ever seen on the jovian moon.
Bright Outburst on Io Jupiter's moon Io saw three massive volcanic eruptions within a two-week period last August. This Aug. 29, 2013, outburst on Io was among the largest ever observed on the most volcanically active body in the solar system. The infrared was image taken by Gemini North telescope, courtesy of Katherine de Kleer, UC Berkeley.

11/8/2013 - 'Weird' OBJECT, MOVING by its OWN JETS, seen beyond Mars orbit by Hubble - "One idea was that we were seeing ice on the asteroid outgassing, but the object is too hot, around 170 Kelvin, for ice," he explained. "An impact with the asteroid was discussed but that would leave one large plume, not six."
