Millions viewed traveling exhibitions of her work in 1972–1979. Between 2003 and 2006, Arbus and her work were the subjects of another major traveling exhibition, Diane Arbus Revelations. Ilse Bing, Self-Portrait in Mirrors (1931), from Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography. Looking up this Ilse Bing image, I happened upon this exhibition at MoMA, which I'd've loved to have seen. What's thrilling is in listing the artists in the show (Diane Arbus, Berenice Abbott, Claude Cahun, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman...) it seems entirely plausible as a 'history of photography' per se, even if it's a 'women artists' show. Which other media could we convincingly say that for?

Henri Cartier-Bresson (French: August 22, 1908 – August 3, 2004) was a French photographer considered the master of candid photography, and an early user of 35 mm film. He helped develop street photography, and approvingly cited a notion of the inevitability of a decisive moment, a term adopted as the title for his first major book. His work has influenced many photographers.

Berenice Abbott (July 17, 1898 – December 9, 1991), born Bernice Abbott, was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photography of New York City architecture and urban design of the 1930s. learned from Ray Mann in Paris
I re-discovered the American photographer Berenice Abbot in an exhibition at Paris' Jeu de Paume a few years ago. Here she is in a portrait by Man Ray. This was a woman with chutzpah and her images have been known to stop me dead in my tracks.
"Man Ray moved to Paris in 1921 where he made his living as a professional fashion and portrait photographer while pursuing more creative work on the side. He became internationally famous as the photographer of Parisian artists between the wars. He made portraits of the entire intellectual elite: Breton, Joyce, Eliot, Schoenberg, Matisse, Ernst, Artaud, Stein, Brancusi, and Hemingway, to name a few." http://www.tfo.upm.es/docencia/ArtDeco/ManRay

Photo by Julia Margaret Cameron, 1865. One of the greatest portraitists in the history of photography, Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) blended an unorthodox technique, a deeply spiritual sensibility, and a Pre- Raphaelite–inflected aesthetic to create a gallery of vivid portraits and a mirror of the Victorian soul.
