Five hundred years ago, Scotland suffered one of its bloodiest defeats in the battle of Flodden Field, fought on 9 September 1513. Flodden figures prominently in Scottish history alongside iconic triumphs over the English such as the battle of Bannockburn, but for very different reasons. Responding to calls for aid from France, James IV of Scotland invaded England. The battle which followed would cost him his life and deprive Scotland of much of its ruling class.
