Growing up in the Czech Republic, Schreiber had seen fireflies only a couple of times. “When I came to the United States, I was shocked and thrilled at the abundance of them,” he says. Schreiber made this image using no flash or external lighting “to preserve the glow of the firefly in its most natural way.” (Radim Schreiber Fairfield, Iowa First Place, Backyard Habitats, Professional )

Fireflies: Lampyridae is a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically-produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale-red, with wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers.

Firefly - We in the south refer to these insects of the night as lighting bugs. So many Alabama summer nights, the children longed to see them first, and we ran together in the grass "catching lightening bugs". Hundreds of them glowed in the darkness, and twinkled on and off as if to signal to us that summer was finally here.Southerns find joy in the simple things in life.
lightening bug: My old friend the "lightning bug". As a child I would get a jar, puncture holes in the lid, place grass, branches with leaves, and put lightening bugs inside. And then I would place them on my nightstand during the night. They were so pretty at nite!. I would release them the next day.
Firefly - Who can remember how much fun it was to catch lightning bugs on hot summer nights? Summertime Magic. #bug #animal

Her smile grew as she reached out for one, but she pulled her hand back quickly as her eyes shot to Carmine’s. “They won’t hurt me, right?” “Right,” he said. “You’re probably ten times more dangerous than fireflies are.” She turned back to the fireflies, gently capturing one in her palm. She opened her hand, staring at it with awe as the bug ran across her hand and took off from the tip of her finger. Sempre by JM Darhower

Fireflies on a warm summer night!
Firefly teaches us to bring things into focus and to lighten the path that is hidden in order to understand our life force. He gives the spark of divine insight and inspiration. Firefly aids in illuminating what is hidden, understands what is confusing, brings wonder and awe in the darkness. He will teach strength to replace fear in the midst of the darkness; spiritual or emotional.

The praying mantis is beneficial to the garden because it hunts and eats many of the insects that can harm your plants.
