Strawberry Health Alert - Expectant mothers eating strawberries may risk, in some cases, birth defects like spina bifida, which is a neural tube defect. Spina bifida is a condition where the spinal vertebrae (back bones) don't completely enclose the spinal cord. It can cause a mild defect or can be life-threatening for the baby.
The Kosinski's, the family who owned the farm next to ours, decided to plant blueberry bushes and became the first farmers in town to have blueberries for sale. When the bushes got big enough to harvest, all of us (kids) and Momma too, would go to work for them to help pick the blueberries for market. That was how we earned a little 'summer money'.
Woodland (wild) Strawberry. (Bet it tastes heavenly). Cultivated widely in Europe until it was usurped by the big, bruisers (with half the taste) we see now. Def. one to look out for. Photo by this, Lily A. Seidel : http://lilyas.deviantart.com/art/Taste-of-Summer-110242068
