Maria Tallchief and Balanchine

"If anything at all, perfection is finally achieved not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away." -Maria Tallchief

Maria #Tallchief dances Firefird: In an interview for The George Balanchine Trust, Tallchief described the first performance of Firebird in 1949. "The city center sounded like a stadium after a football game, after somebody's made a touchdown," Tallchief said. Balanchine, explained Tallchief, said that her performance was the "first great success of the New York City Ballet."

George Balanchine in 1958, when he was ballet master of the New York City Ballet, working with Maria Tallchief.

George Balanchine's production of Jewels. Involved: Emerald, Diamond and Ruby.

I must read Maria Tallchief's autobiography; the half-Native American ballerina created the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the first Balanchine Nutcracker and was also Balanchine's wife.

Beautiful photos - a time when even the ballerinas seemed to enjoy a little more weight in their carriage :)
