The Door to Hell... has direct human involvement, however the creation of the Door to Hell certainly wasn’t the intended outcome. It is located in Turkmenistan. The name ‘Door to Hell’ comes from the fact that this hole has been burning for over 35 yrs without stopping! It was initially discovered while drilling for gas deposits but the cavern caved in, took a lot of expensive equipment with it and filled with poisonous gas. It was decided the best course of action would be to burn the gas out.

Doorway - Cappadocia, Turkey I love how this door is key-shaped. It is bright and sunny outside, yet dark and mysterious inside. A welcome cool place out of the sun? Or a secret lair for mythical creatures? You've got my imagination stirred up now
