NASA Satellite Image of Palm Oil Fires Raging In Sumatra- February 28, 2014: In 2014 the Governor of Riau declared a state of emergency as fires set to clear land for palm oil sent pollution levels soaring. 22,000 people suffered respiratory illnesses and schools were closed to protect children from exposure. The annual fires impact all of Southeast Asia. A new report finds that each year around 110,000 deaths are associated with exposure to particulate matter from palm oil fires.
