Meteora (Greece). The name Meteora means ‘suspended in air' and includes the entire rock community of 24 monasteries. There were no steps to the monasteries, the main access was by a net hitched over a hook and hoisted up by rope and hand cranked windlass to towers overhanging the chasm. Monks descended in nets or by retractable wooden ladders to the fertile valleys below to tend grapes, corn and potatoes.
