What Items Can Be Made From Plastic Water Bottles? By Jack Taylor. Plastic water bottles have been used to make weird and wonderful things. There are many different items that can be made from plastic water bottles, ranging from simple everyday items, including pens and bags, to unique items, such as boats and suits of armor. Some people have found uses for modified plastic water bottles around the home, such as plant watering devices and bird feeders. Lots of imagination has gone into the development of items made from plastic water bottles, and people are continually coming up with new ideas for items that can be made from plastic water bottles. The plastic bottle has been used to make clothing for quite some time, and the most well-known item is probably the polar fleece material used in hats, sweaters, jackets and many other items. In an effort to promote a more environmentally friendly public image, a number of surfing companies have developed boardshorts made from plastic bottles. Innovative fashion designer Alexander Julian developed a graduation gown, a garment that is often worn once and discarded, that is entirely made out of recycled plastic bottles. Recently, the Pilot Corporation, a pen manufacturer from Japan, has released the Be Green line of pens and pencils. The Bottle to Pen (B2p) uses materials that consist of 89% recycled plastic bottles. Another company using plastic bottles to manufacture their products is ChicoBag, who has a range of bags made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Other common items that are made from plastic bottles include the filler in sleeping bags and some types of carpets. Unique Items: Some people have used plastic bottles to make things that are completely unique. The 'Plastiki' is a boat that was built using 12,500 plastic bottles. David de Rothschild funded the construction of the boat and completed a four month voyage from San Francisco to Sydney in July 2010 using the plastic bottle boat. It is now on display in Sydney's Maritime Museum. A British man, Richard Sowas, came up with a unique idea for using plastic bottles in 1998. Spiral Island was an actual island that was created by using plastics bottles surrounded by nets to keep it afloat. Unfortunately, a hurricane destroyed Spiral Island in 2005, but Spiral Island II was completed three years later with the use of 100,000 plastic bottles. Another unique but impractical item made out of plastic bottles is a suit of armor designed manufactured by Kosuke Tsmura. Improvised Items: People from all over the world are coming up with new ways to use discarded plastic water bottles every day. Some items are practical, some recreational and others are cosmetic. Bird lovers can make a bird feeder from an empty plastic bottle by simply piercing holes in the side of the bottle near the base, filling with food through the top and hanging the bottle from a tree. Gardeners often use plastic bottles to make improvised plant watering devices while away from the home. This is done by cutting off the bottom of the bottle, removing the bottle cap and pushing the bottle into the ground or plant pot upside down. Once filled with water, the soil will gradually absorb the water.

How to Make Bird Feeders From Plastic Bottles Bird Feeders Made With Two-Liter Bottles Decorate plastic bottles before hanging them as bird feeders. Make homemade bird feeders from plastic milk jugs, 2-liter soda bottles or any other plastic bottle in little time. Once you finish making a plastic bottle bird feeder, decorating it adds a personal touch, making the feeder truly unique. If you are looking for decorating ideas for you or your little ones on how to decorate plastic bottle bird feeders, a few examples will help spark the creative ideas. Paint: Before painting the outside of the plastic bottle, prepare it to take the paint. Rub the outside of the bottle with sandpaper to scuff it up. The smooth surface of most bottles makes it difficult for paint to stick. Scuffing it gives it a longer lasting design. When painting the feeder, the choices are endless. A few ideas include a mosaic, pictures of flowers or a solid color. When making a hummingbird feeder, for example, use red to paint it, since hummingbirds like the color red. Ensure that the paint is completely dry before hanging the feeder. Gluing Decorations Either glue decorations on the outside of the bottle instead of painting it or add them after the paint has dried. Apply glue to the bottle and then add glitter in a pattern or smooth it over the bottle. Small silk flowers around the mouth of a hummingbird feeder helps attract the birds. Alternatively, for an all-natural look, glue leaves, sticks or dried flowers to the surface of the bottle. Avoid live flowers that will wilt. Allow the glue to dry completely before using the feeder to help ensure that the decorations do not fall off immediately. Papier Mache Scuff the outside of the bottle first using sandpaper. The textured surface helps the papier mache adhere better to the bottle. Dip strips of colored paper, such as tissue paper, into slightly diluted craft glue. Pull the paper strips through your fingers to remove the excess glue and then apply the strips to the bottle in any pattern you would like. Use the strips to make a random pattern or a specific design. Allow the glue to dry completely. Words of Caution No matter what style of decorating you choose, remember the safety of the birds. When choosing paints, look for nontoxic ones. Acrylic or craft paints work well, as do watercolors. Utilize craft glues that are also nontoxic for both gluing decorations and for papier mache. Only use as much glue you need. Choose decorations for the outside that do not pose a choking hazard. Avoid small beads or pom poms that may be mistaken for birdseed. Inspect the bird feeder once or twice a week to check for damage to the decoration. If paint is peeling or decorations are falling off, remove the bottle to avoid a potential choking hazard for the birds. Bottle Decorating Servicewww.flow-e...
