Plant dill in your perennial butterfly bed. Cool texture, re-seeds itself and is a host plant for swallowtails. Much nicer than fennel which will kill things around it. Carrots and parsley are also a plus.

Parsley stimulates normal activity of the the digestive system, freshens breath, and improves bladder, kidney, liver, lung, stomach and thyroid function. It contains vitamins A, C and K.

July 29th - Day 62 - Yet another Eastern Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar in the herb garden! I'm waiting to harvest any more parsley until these critters get a good feed and finally go into chrysalis. The Middle Eastern tabbouleh salad I've been Jonesin' for will have to wait... I've got a mini eco-sphere in the works here.

Companion planting. "Plants have best friends just like people do. Marigolds help tomatoes and roses grow better. Nasturtiums keep bugs away from squash and broccoli. Petunias protect beans from beetles and oregano chases them away from cucumbers. Geraniums keep Japanese beetles away from roses and corn. Chives make carrots sweeter, and basil makes tomatoes even tastier."
