Mash the beans, and use them to thicken the broth; leave some whole for added texture. This is one of my all time favorite soups, and has many important qualities: it's vegetarian, cheap and easy to make. Add fresh parm, toasted french bread, & good olive oil to garnish it all, and it's a very warming and filling winter dinner.
