Schistosome fluke. Coloured SEM of a schistosome (Schistosoma sp.) fluke worm, a cause of schistosomiasis in humans. This parasitic trematode (flatworm) lives in the veins around the large intestine, anchoring itself to the wall of the blood vessel with several suckers (one seen at centre), and feeding on its host's blood. The worms cause fever and abdominal pain, and the eggs produced by the female worm can form obstructions of tissues known as granulomas.

WATER BEARS ACTIVE DORMANTWATER BEAR EGGSWater bears (or tardigrades) are tiny invertebrates that live in aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats such as lichen and damp moss. They require water to obtain oxygen by gas exchange. However, in dry conditions, they can enter a cryptobiotic state of dessication, known as a tun, to survive. In this state, water bears can survive for up to a decade.  Water bears are found throughout the world, including regions of extreme temperature, such as hot spri…

Dinoflagellates are tiny bioluminescent marine plankton. A 'bloom' (heavy concentration) of dinoflagellates can result in the visible coloration of seawater known as a red tide, which can be poisonous to humans who consume contaminated shellfish.
