All we have to do is grab some 2-liter plastic bottles, punch 2 holes into the sides and 2 into the bottom, and plant said bottles next to our plants.     Start putting in your plants; work the nutrients into your soil. Wet newspapers and put layers around the plants overlapping as you go; cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic; they will not get through wet newspapers.

    For all those old t-shirts you still want to use, but not wear. Cut the sleeves and neck then stitch the bottom closed. Great way to introduce upcycling to your kids...make their own bags from outgrown t-shirts.
