Today as I was working on Google Forms to create some forms for my colleagues in the university, the idea of providing my readers here with some practical pre-made template forms dawned on me. I know many of you would have recourse to the services provided by Google Forms and sometimes it would take you a lot of time to get what you want into form; having a set of ready made forms can make your job easier knowing that most of the ones I handpicked for you today are among the most used templates in Google Docs. Day 7 What new learning has inspired you in your career? I remember reluctantly joining a group of teachers at my high school several years ago in writing a grant that would bring more computers into our school. I say "reluctant" because I was already in a room directly next to a computer lab and partly in charge of running the lab. I didn't know if I wanted more computers under my care. However, the grant required two English teachers and two math teachers to work together. Several months later we all sat down with some Google guys... and I was hooked. Two days of Google App training later, and I realized that I could use Google Docs, Forms, Sheets, etc... to revitalize my teaching practices. I was able to become a teacher with a 1:1 classroom. Each student would have a computer (Chromebook), and we could do more with them than just word processing or research (even though we would use them to do both). I still had a computer lab next door to me, but having a computer lab in my classroom was that much more exciting. Using Google Apps daily in my classroom has been inspirational to me because the students use technology every day in their lives, and if I can tap into that already built-in interest with technology by connecting it to my content, how much better is that!? In addition to a class that runs on much less paper, I also get the chance to learn more and more technology myself. So.. bonus!

The wave of the future is here especially for education. Terms like 21st Century Computing, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), and Cloud Computing, are mainstream. The introduction of mobile devices, iPods, netbooks, and more specifically the iPad has brought technology to more students then ever before. A 1 to 1 environment(1 student per 1 technology device) is not only a possibility but a reality in more school districts then people realize. W/ all that being said I have decided to create a list of my 10 favorite sites for finding educational apps. Top 10 Sites for Educational Apps APPitic - Is a great site w/ over 1300+ reviews done by Apple Distinguished Educators. These apps have been tested in different grade levels w/ different instructional strategies. Mind Leap - Mind Leap is an excellent site w/ reviews built on a 5 star scale. Reviews are done on a wide range of subjects and offers a nice breakdown of statistics such as: educational quality, engagement factor, and shelf life. Best Kids Apps - Is a site w/ great reviews on iPhone, iPad, and Android apps. These reviews have a basic age rating and a nice image to go along too. Mac App Store - Probably the most comprehensive list of apps around. This application from Apple is the ideal place to find and purchase apps. FYI, works on Snow Leopard OS and above. Fun Educational Apps - A ideal place to find reviews of apps for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. This is one of my favorite sites to find in depth reviews w/ lots of pictures of the app. Smart Apps for Kids - Is a site designed by a dad on a journey to find the best iPhone & iPad apps. These apps are reviewed on a 4 star scale and offer a nice "bottom line" for those who don't want to read the whole review. Best Apps for Kids - A wonderful site that does a great breakdown of an educational app. These reviews are done on a scale of 1 - 5, and offers the reader advice on wether they should purchase the app or not. Teachers with Apps - A great site w/ reviews of apps that include videos and images. Ideal for teachers looking to find that perfect app for the classroom. Apps in Education - A nice collection of iPad apps that are reviewed by subject. These reviews are brief and to the point. I Education Apps Review - Is a site designed as a community effort of reviews posted by a variety of users. There are even student reviews to give a unique perspective on the use of an app. Bonus - Teach with your iPad - Is a wonderful wiki that lists a ton of apps by subject, type, and grade level. A must see...

Skype is popular way to contact people from far distances. My CT is going to have her students be pen pals to soldiers overseas. I thought this would be an interesting way they could also be in contact with a soldier pen pal. Letters could be sent through the school year, and an occasional video call could be done. Then the students get to see and hear the person, which allows them to put a face to a name. There are many other ways to use Skype on this website.
