magic galaxies

NASA's Hubble and Spitzer telescopes combined to make these shape-shifting galaxies taking on the form of a giant mask. The icy blue eyes are actually the cores of two merging galaxies, called NGC 2207 and IC and the mask is their spiral arms.

This mosaic image of Andromeda spiral galaxy -- showing explosive stars in its interior and cooler, dusty stars forming in its many rings -- combines observations from the Herschel Space Observatory taken in infrared light (the orange hues), and the XMM-Newton telescope captured in X-rays (the blues). Andromeda is our nearest large neighbor -- located about 2.5 million light-years away and holds nearly trillion stars. Our Milky Way galaxy contains about 200 - 400 billion stars.

Scientists discover planets which travel up to 30million miles per hour after coming into contact with black holes

Best Of European Space Agency Photos - Herchel's Image Of Andromeda Galaxy The European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory took this infrared image of the Andromeda Galaxy, showing rings of dust that trace gaseous reservoirs where new stars are

When I consider Your Heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor." (Psalm 8:3-5)

Australian astronomers find the oldest star, 13.6 billion years old, making it the most ancient star seen. It lies in our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Australian astronomers find the "oldest star" billion years old, making it the most ancient star seen. It lies in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, at a distance of around light years from Earth. story dated: 10 Feb 2014

The Eagle Nebula (M16 or NGC 6611) is an open star cluster surrounded by the diffuse emission nebula and H II region IC 4703. This starburst region lies 6,500 light-years away in the Serpens constellation and is home of the famous “Pillars of Creation”.

NGC 1097 is a barred spiral galaxy about 45 mly away in the constellation Fornax. It was discovered by Herschel on 10/09/1790. NGC 1097 is also a Seyfert galaxy.

NGC 1097 is a barred spiral galaxy about 45 million light years away in the constellation Fornax (The Furnace). It was discovered in NGC 1097 is a type Seyfert galaxy. The smaller galaxy, NGC is about light years away from NGC

Cassiopeia -- New Photo Reveals ‘Ghostly’ Green Nebula in Deep Space An amazing new photo from a telescope in Chile has captured the most detailed view yet of a green glowing blob light-years away from Earth. Credit: ESO The new image, released toda

NGC 1291 (also NGC 1269) - This ring galaxy located about 33 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus was imaged by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The red outer ring is filled with new stars heating up and igniting dust that glows with infrared light

Though galaxy NGC 1291 is quite old, roughly 12 billion years, it is marked by an unusual ring where newborn stars are igniting, visible in this new Spitzer infrared image.

#TadpoleGalaxy! Disrupted barred spiral galaxy located 400mly from #Earth toward the northern constellation #Draco. It's most dramatic features are a trail of stars about 280,000 lys long massive star clusters. It is thought that a more compact galaxy crossed in front of the Tadpole Galaxy was slung around behind the Tadpole by their mutual gravitational attraction. source:iliveinaspiralgalaxy.tumblr.com #space #tadpolegalaxy
