The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross Ruby Bridges Desegregates a New Orleans Public School
Ruby Nelle Bridges born: September 8, 1954 (age 59) Tylertown, Mississippi occupation: Civil Rights Activist Ruby Nelle Bridges was a smart African American child. She attended a segregated school, when a school attendant realized she deserved a better education because of her smartness. She was born the same year Brown v. Board of Education was taken to supreme court. That court made it possible for her to attend an all white school. She faced harsh discrimination but held her head high.
Ruby Bridges - a brave little 6-year old who became the 1st black chlld to attend a white school in 1960. One of the federal marshals, Charles Burks, who served on her escort team, recalls: "For a little girl 6 years old going into a strange school with 4 strange deputy marshals, a place she had never been before, she showed a lot of courage. She never cried. She didn't whimper. She just marched along like a little soldier. We were all very proud of her."
