It was taken by Anthony Berger, a Brady operator, to assist the artist Francis B. Carpenter in his massive painting of Lincoln reading the Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet.

The explorers, said she was cheerful, never complained, and proved to be invaluable. She served as an advisor, caretaker, and is legendary for her perseverance and resourcefulness.
