ThanksDorie Miller was born in Waco, TX. He joined the Navy as a cook and was in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. He helped carry many sailors to safety and manned an anti aircraft weapon that he had never been trained to use. He was award the Navy Cross for his heroic actions and it was personally presented to him by Admiral Nimitz - head of the entire Pacific Fleet. It was the first time that an African American in the Pacific Fleet received such a high commendation. awesome pin

Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz (February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966), was a five-star admiral of the United States Navy. He held the dual command of Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet (CinCPac), for U.S. naval forces and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CinCPOA), for U.S. and Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. He was the leading U.S. Navy authority on submarines, as well as Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Navigation in 1939.

Jimmy Carter was accepted into the Naval Academy in 1943 and served in the US Navy as a submarine officer in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets until October 9, 1953.
