First, we brainstormed a time that we have been sick.  My students made a little bubble map in their journals to start their process.  I love how this cutie made her bubble map into a sick person.  The next day, we put all of our ideas together on the chart shown above!

In the beginning of the school year, I believe it is important to talk to students about why adult readers read. It is important for students to know that reading can be fun and enjoyable. Brainstorm ideas about "Why Readers Read" and have students generate an anchor chart to display in the classroom.
