On the night of June 10, 1933 Clyde with Bonnie in the front seat was speeding on a rural road of N Texas so quickly that he missed a detour sign at a bridge under construction. The Ford smashed a barricade and sailed into a dry riverbed. Scalding acid poured out of the smashed car battery and severly burned Bonnie's leg, as a result of 3rd degree burns she walked with a limp for the rest of her life, and she had such difficulty walking that at times she hopped or needed Clyde to carry her.
